Well writers should want people to read their work. However, they should want people to read it for what it honestly and truly is. They should not want to people to read it because they were suckered in by a misleading description, or because of the presumption that they'll enjoy it is they start even if it wasn't what they were searching for. That is the attitude that ends up ruining things for everyone.

I don't think all of the tag spam on AO3 is because writers are intentionally lying for the purposes of self-promotion.

I think that is, frankly, ridiculous.

How would limiting the number of tags prevent writers from misrepresenting their works? All they'd have to do is tag the wrong genre, characters, ships, and warnings, and write up a bullshit description.
