for discussion of weight

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Any topics fine, but I just have to ask if anybody hates the term "lost the weight" as much as I do. And I can't even put my finger on why that "the" is such a berserk button for me, it just drives me batty.

Huh. That would only make sense to me if it was, "I lost the weight I wanted to."

I don't think I've ever heard "lost the weight" before actually.

I don't like the term because the thing you want to lose isn't weight, it's fat.

There are plenty of people who are physically heavy but don't have a lot of excess body fat. It's called having muscle mass, and if you don't have any you're probably not in very good shape regardless of whether your body is fat or skinny.

Shot in the dark, "The weight" sort of glosses over what has actually happened, makes it routine and maybe even normalizes it a little bit, making it an either/or (fat/not fat) instead of putting the focus on improving health.

Not particularly.

Because when you lose something, you generally imply you are trying to find it again? Presumably you do not want the Weight back again. You disposed of excess Weight, you did not lose it. It is not down the back of the sofa waiting to be rediscovered.

It's not the "lost" that bothers me. It's the "the." Maybe because it puts weight on some other level of existence. It's not just weight, it's THE WEIGHT, which seems...like it's making weight a villain rather than a circumstance. And I guess you *could* see it that way, given obesity-related health issues...I just don't like the power it gives weight, or something.

I'm probably not making any sense.

I get it.

The new weight watchers system sounds awful. How WW works : Every food gets a number of points. You have a number of food points you spend in a way (calculated according to your sex, age, height and weight). The less fat or sweet a food is, the cheaper in points it is. Teaches you to eat vegetables (which are at zero). If you go over your daily number of points, worry not as you have 49 points every week you spend as you go over your daily points. Physical activities give you more weekly points.

Well mom went to weekly meeting and they introduced the new point system. There's much much less weekly points and everything became expensive except vegetables. 0/10 would not recommend.

That sounds like the way WW used to be, which I actually liked better than the most recent system. Huh.

For you and your mom: I've lost a lot of weight (fat, if we want to get pedantic) with just straight up calorie counting. It honestly is easier.

I use Myfitnesspal (it's both a website and an app, either work).

I used MFP for a while. Great tool, good people. Calorie counting worked for me, too. Super simple.

+1 to this!

To me, saying "the" just makes the weight lost more specific. Like, "I lost the weight I gained freshman year." Or, "She gradually lost the baby weight." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't see 'the weight' often except in cases like this, but I can see why it might bother OP. It does feel specific.

Like...is there some set amount of weight people are supposed to lose? Everyone's different...

I probably wouldn't think much of it if I heard it myself, but it does sound a bit awkward.

...Huh. I hear people say it this way all the time and I can't think of a problem with it even after reading people's reasons.

Could it be regional?
