Yeah, well, sadly that aesthetic is taking over everything. iphones and Ikea everywhere... I mean I agree with you, there's nothing cozy about those environments, but what can we do...

See I don't feel the aesthetic is taking over everything (especially if we're talking about films/shows), but I don't think it's a bad thing personally for the sci-fi genre.

To me, that sterilized 'shiny new plastic wrapped' aesthetic is kind of how I see a lot of futuristic.

Maybe I'm just being a contrarian but suddenly I want to see a sci-fi aesthetic that's really cluttered, where people have a tendency to turn into packrats and settings are covered in future technologies that became outdated but still show signs that they were used.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I wouldn't mind that either to be honest. I don't think there's a 'wrong' way to go for sci-fi, because really, the whole point of sci-fi is that it's fiction, we don't know the future.

That's what I liked about the original Star Wars. Everything looks kind of beat up and used. Luke's landspeeder, the Millenium Falcon, and even the x-wings, all fo them look like they've actually been used.

I like this, too, but always in the back of my mind is the idea that they'll have to dive out of the way of an attacking ship or suddenly lose gravity and *everything* goes flying. I hate when there are basically 'missiles' of cups and pictures and books and things flying around, say, a ship under attack. At the very *least*, have some kind of elastic webbing to bundle all the crap into, so you don't get brained by your (hopefully non-spill) coffee cup!

But maybe the character's lazy and short-sighted.

That could be fun, actually, showing the consequences of that by having stuff flying all over the ship, and maybe a passenger is like, "wtf is wrong with you? Get some storage!"

Like the original Alien movie?...

Like Ghost in the Shell?
