Yeah, I was getting serious wife-shopping vibes too. What makes it worse is that I know he wants to marry a Nice Jewish Girl, and I happen to be the only Nice Jewish Girl in this tiny, tiny community who is anywhere near his age.

You know what's even skeevier? When he asked me out, he knew exactly how old I was - but I didn't know how many years older than me he was, just that he was "older". Yeah.

Ick. Yeah, wife shopping vibes everywhere.

If you don't mind my asking, how old were you and he at the time?

It didn't happen very long ago. So I was late twenties, and he's in early forties. It's not like he was perving on a kid or anything - but still, inappropriate. And his timing was awful. And the wife shopping vibes.

Huh. Weird.

Lots of people don't mind that kind of age gap...I'd be one of the people who does, though, so while I don't know if I'd call it inappropriate overall, it would be very DNW for me to be hit on by someone in his forties (I'm 25).

Well, within my social group over 10 years is generally considered a bit strange. As in, if you like somebody and don't mind, that's one thing, but I generally wouldn't blind date somebody more than 10 years older than me.
The thing that bothers me is that a few times when ages came up around the table, he was always super cagey about how old he actually was. For me personally, I do mind that age gap - and I think it's a little bit iffy of him to not be upfront about it.

Even worse was that the "NO I DO NOT WANT TO DATE YOU" conversation happened *twice* and took over half an hour each time. It should not take half an hour to make somebody understand that I don't want to date them. The whole situation was super awkward, and made worse by the fact that it's a tiny community and I didn't want to turn it into a huge drama, because that would end up massively awkward for everybody.

Wow, that sounds just super awkward all the way around. And it sucks that you had to feel so much responsibility for keeping it drama-free when he was the one who just would not get the picture. :|
