Gaslighting

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else noticed this term getting used to describe every instance of emotional/verbal mistreatment lately?

I've seen it used to describe parents who are unpredictable because they're on drugs/alcohol, people who neglect emotional needs, people who yell at their partners a lot, people who care too much about appearances, etc etc. It's really bothering me, because it's a very specific thing, and I think diluting terms makes it harder to talk about things and tackle them.

Maybe I'm just weird.

No, you're not the only one. I used to know what gaslighting meant, but now that everyone is using it differently, I'm not so sure any more if the term has changed or what.

Its not just bothering you - its a very specific act, and its more complex than just "being manipulative" - its a type of manipulation sure, but not all manipulation is gaslighting.

A bunch of people jumped all over me for using it (correctly) here some time ago, so I'm sure basically no one knows how to use it.

How did you use it?

In a context where my mother was a sociopath and fucked me up for life. Believe me, I used it correctly.
