Yeah, costs for these major releases are astronomical compared to what they were when the original FF7 came out. The OG was one of the largest game projects ever, and it had over 300 people working on it. Nowadays triple-A titles have thousands of people working on them, and yet game prices haven't gone up to compensate.

Game companies scrape by on DLC and micro-transactions and cutting dev costs where they can by doing things like recycling assets. (That's why there's a new AC every year. It's cheap compared to developing new IPs.)

Yeah. And they can't recycle any assets for this remake, meaning they have to literally build a remake from the ground up while adding in more just to please fans who want it to be better and make it a fully fleshed-out world like is to be expected. That's going to take time and money. And when you get an airship with enough time to actually explore, then a minimal world map won't be enough. You can create the illusion of space and vastness easy when you're on foot, but when you're in the air that quickly goes away.

Have game prices at least adjusted for inflation?

I mean, I don't pay any attention at all to gaming as an industry, but if prices for AAA titles are the same in nominal dollars, that would mean they're actually cheaper in real dollars.

Not even vaguely. idr exactly what FF7 retailed for new, but I'm pretty sure it was $50 or $60. Certainly by the PS2 era new games were $60 for a big game, $20 for a small game like Katamari. And that hasn't changed at all.

And now with things like steam sales pushing prices even lower, videogames are the cheapest they've ever been.

No. Chrono Trigger and FFVI? Sold for $70~ each when they came out. They'd be, adjusted for inflation, over $100 dollars now.

And games have gotten more expensive to make.
