As funny as I find Aziz Ansari, I have to agree: his humor and charm really shine when he's in an ensemble cast.

(IMHO, it also doesn't help that the show seemed disjointed.)

Yeah I don't want to say "he should just be a side character" because it sounds rude as hell but I swear the stuff I've liked him in is where he's in an ensemble or sometimes he's good in stuff if it really doesn't require a lot of acting.

Not all comedians are good actors or meant to be lead material though. Comedy can be a very different skill set.
