I love the original. I really, really do. But I just can't find it in me to seriously find fault with Gankutsuou (it was lacking in the backstory, and the actual 'Gankutsuou' concept was... iffy, but.)
It's just an amazing alternate telling (and yeah, despite the 'alternate', it's quite sad it's the most loyal version to the book!) I adore the focus on Albert. I like that there's more Franz, and that Valentine and Maximilien are deeper characters than they were in the book.
At what point did you stop watching? The end moral of the anime is basically the same as the book - and since the Count didn't end up with Mercedes, that was another big plus point for me. :p
