61. I don't know about anyone else, but this secret reeks of elitism to me. Was the FF bashing really necessary? Also, it's pretty pretentious of you to assume that the only reason people like newer games is the graphics. Maybe they really do like how the games play, just like how you like all those games in your secret? It looks like nowadays that the good old games of yore are becoming overrated in order to counteract the popularity of the newer games.

Words change and mean different things to other people. What is old school to you may not old school to someone else. Old school is not just a word to describe older games, it also has to do with the fond attachment we have to them. My first gaming system was the Sega Genesis. My cousin had one and I was all about Sonic. According to my parents, every time we'd go to my cousins, all I'd talk about on the way home was Sonic. Hell, I'm not sure if I was even aware of the existence of NES and SNES at that age. Breath of Fire IV was my first introduction to RPGs. Sonic and Breath of Fire IV are my old school, and even though they were made a long time ago, (lots of them before Sonic's time for sure) NES and SNES games feel like a newer thing to me. When I first played Kirby's Adventure a few months ago, it felt like a brand new shiny thing to me, no different from were I to head on down to the store and buy the latest graphically stunning new release. The same holds true for other people, such as ones who started with the Playstation or the Nintendo 64. To them, FFVII is their old school. Super Mario 64 is their old school.

AMEN. To... everything you said, basically. ♥

It looks like nowadays that the good old games of yore are becoming overrated in order to counteract the popularity of the newer games.

ESPECIALLY THAT. Seriously, let's just love games for the games, not what they're subjectively classified as. Christ's sake, people.

[And yes, I'm using an AC icon because I can. lolol.]

I love old games, especially now that ports and things like the Wii's Virtual Console make them a million times more accessible. But the same thing that happened to FFVI (when fanboys use it as the anti-FFVII) is happening to all these games too, especially SMRPG from what I see. A lot of people love it, sure, but they use it as a weapon against the big thing, claiming big thing is "overrated" and how their game is so much better. If you don't like something, that's fine. Saying you prefer another game over said game is fine, but don't use them as a tool in your crusade against big thing. That's now how you should treat your games and the memories they give you.

It's why I hate the word overrated. EVERYONE is going to overrate the games they love, whether they mean to or not.

I'm sorry if this is irrelevant, but I love that icon.

61 OP

Fine, forget the term 'old school' and replace it with 'pre-fifth generation console gaming'.

And I do think graphics has a lot to do with it. I mean, if Axel from KH was a two-dimensional sprite, would he have so much fan attention? I'll admit I'm a sucker for the bish as much as any other fangirl, but games like KH drew in a lot of people that were into the games less for the gameplay and more for the pretty - and I'll include some people I know personally on this count.

And yes, I think the FF series is vastly overrated. I didn't say they were bad, just overrated. I could get into precisely what I don't like about the series, but that's an essay in itself. :P

Yes, but Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and FFVI drew me in for their "pretty" too. It was pretty only for it's time, but hell - does that make me more or less of a gamer if I was shallow in SNES days as opposed to shallow in PS2 days?

Actually, Axel first appeared as a 2D sprite and managed to get a considerable fanbase.
