2) Poor Hud! He was totally the best character in the movie...I wish he'd lived. ;_; (Still loved the movie, tho.)

44) I used to think the same way you did. And then I started learning CG myself. And honestly? It's all the exact same thing...same principles, same techniques, same needs for both 2D and 3D art. The only thing different is the tools you use to animate. You can have crappy 2D and crappy 3D, the same way you can have amazing 2D and amazing 3D. If he can get good artists into improving all kinds of animation, I don't see why that's a bad thing.

That said, Glen is amazing. ♥ His 2D work has been one of my biggest inspirations.

I know...I understand that. It just makes me sad that 2D is getting less work and opportunities, and he's...well, supporting it. Knowingly or not.

Well, it could be that the market is shifting back into doing 2D as well as 3D movies...at least with Enchanted and The Frog Princess, Disney is going back to making some 2D movies, and since other companies tend to follow what Disney does, it could mean more of that all around.

Honestly, I think what's worse for 2D is the fact that nearly all of the work is shipped overseas. D: (Although they'll do that with most everything...) And when that doesn't happen, at least in television, they just slap everything together in Flash.

But that's Disney, who can afford to do what they wish. Nickelodeon has been shifting more and more to Flash-made series, and non-entertainment animation is also getting less and less hand-drawn oriented.

These problems come from the same source, though: the desire to make costs diminish. Labor in Korea is a fraction of the labor in America, and hand-drawn animation is less commissioned because it's less desirable to the public and therefore the investors. It's never the artists with the cash and therefore the financial ability to make decisions. And that's, unfortunately, what it comes down to.

No you're right; it is pretty much because companies want to make things as cheap as possible (and because they perceive their audience as only wanting CG animation, which I don't think is necessarily true.) I guess my point is that I agree that there should be more 2D out there, both for the artists and for its own sake. But I don't think it's CG that's to blame for 2D getting pushed aside, rather than it is studio execs making poor decisions...or at least cheap decisions.

The only thing artists/animators can do about it is to be able to do as many different things as possible...then they'll always have work, whether 2D ever really gets popular again (one can hope!) or not. After all, ten years from now, they'll probably have some new way of animating that'll make today's CG obsolete...there's already CG animators who're becoming "old guard" and unable to use whatever new programs/methods they're churning out. ;)

Oh, I'm not blaming CG. But IT'S THE VEHICLE OF OUR DESTRUCTION This is very true~ I hope a program better than Maya comes out soon. I hate Maya with a burning passion.
