I liked "Turn of the Screw," but a lot of my class hated it. Believe me, you're not the only one who got bored with the long, redundant, purple-prose passages. I argued in my paper on the work that the governess was a total nutjob from the get-go too, but the mansion was haunted as well. But the true harm came from the repressive governess herself, not from the supernatural elements. So for me, the nuts protagonist is was made it stand out.

Despite this, I think "Turn of the Screw" was probably one of the least popular selections from our reading list that year. Another reason I enjoyed it, however, is that I read "Turn of the Screw" as a send-up of the clichéd Jane Eyre type of romances popular in James' time. In that case, then the prose became part of the necessary building-blocks to create a 19th century romance, in order to deconstruct it.

But still, it's perfectly fine to just not like something. I've been in English literature studies for four years, and from my experience half of the fun in the courses is to complete pick apart and bitch out a work. It's like an academic pastime!

One student's Wordsworth is another one's Milton. Seriously. Someone hated Milton, while I loathed their beloved Wordsworth. Blood was shed.
