Despite this, I think "Turn of the Screw" was probably one of the least popular selections from our reading list that year. Another reason I enjoyed it, however, is that I read "Turn of the Screw" as a send-up of the clichéd Jane Eyre type of romances popular in James' time. In that case, then the prose became part of the necessary building-blocks to create a 19th century romance, in order to deconstruct it.
But still, it's perfectly fine to just not like something. I've been in English literature studies for four years, and from my experience half of the fun in the courses is to complete pick apart and bitch out a work. It's like an academic pastime!
One student's Wordsworth is another one's Milton. Seriously. Someone hated Milton, while I loathed their beloved Wordsworth. Blood was shed.
