My dad was in school when corporal punishment was still a thing, and he'd tell stories about shoving comic books and newspapers into his pants when it came time for a paddling.

See, I've always thought that was an urban legend. Don't you think that the person wielding the paddle would be able to tell the difference?

Roald Dahl's memoirs said that they were allowed to choose something like five hits with dressing gown off or six with it on, and they always chose "on" because they could wear a thick dressing gown and pad it.

He said sometimes they could tell and sometimes they couldn't. It was mostly all in how well he sold it hurting. The feel wouldn't be all that different to the paddler, just the sound.

I asked my dad (who went to a 1950s English boarding school) about it and he said they always got the cane on their bare backsides so he never got a chance to pad anything!
