That's not how movies work though? A scene or two in the first act is generally how you show a relationship and establish stakes.

I do think the inclusion of the line in the trailer is a bit of a miscalculation (from the POV of die hard fans, I bet most of the audience doesn't notice or care. but it seems like everyone is assuming it can't possibly be handled wel in the movie

In a standalone movie, I'd agree with you. But they're calling back to an older relationship that the majority of their audience is already familiar with. So even if they /wanted/ to establish a new dynamic in the first couple of minutes, they have that previous baggage to address.
