What I REALLY DON'T like is fanfic that make the characters swear when the source doesn't.

I feel the same way. I also don't like when characters who do swear in the source material are made to use either different or more, er, "potent" swears in fanfic. E.g, a character who says "damn" and "shit" but utters not a single "fuck" in canon suddenly saying "fuck" all over the place.

Grant you, sometimes, the reason a character refrains from certain swears is because the writers have been limited by the medium or ratings system. Nonetheless, it's jarring to me.
