I understand. I started reading the books after the first movie came out. Like any moony-eyed teenage girl, I was nuts for Legolas and wanted to read more about him. Instead, I end up falling head over heels for Samwise and I'm still into him to this day. Samwise is just so damn awesome, not because he hacks and slashes scores of enemies, but because he steadfastly clings to simple hobbit virtues of courage and hope. So many times when the quest goes south, he single-handedly manages to dig deep and find the words needed to keep things going. That's pretty damn awesome in my book.

In all honesty, Legolas in the books comes across as something of a fruitcake. But I tend to dig the dwarves and the hobbits more than the elves in Tolkien's world.
