"As much as I love Gotham Central, I disagree with the idea that it's a good comic to rec to newbies. I think it loses a lot of its impact and meaning if you don't already have some familiarity with the Batman mythos."

I read it knowing NOTHING about Batman comics & I thought it was an excellent procedural -- no run of the mill about it -- and a cool introduction to the DCU. I've reread it since and appreciated new things in it but it was definitely a good gateway comic for this newbie.

That makes sense. I've never read(?) Gotham Central, but assume if you're not familiar with the Batman mythos, it'd largely feel like a run of the mill CSI/NCIS procedural.

Sadly I kind of have to agree. The reason it worked was BECAUSE it wasn't just a police procedural comic, but one centered around Batman (while keeping him almost totally offscreen.)

Yeah, I feel that.
