Re: Asshole Writers
(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:40 am (UTC)(link)Good lord. Do all writers have a total lack of social skills and self-awareness? It seems like they just sit around waiting for their turn to talk about themselves, and think everyone is interested in hearing their criticism of the latest videogame/novel/popular nerdy thing.
No, but about 50% of them are like that. Or they're the flip side of the coin and look down on anyone who implies they like video games/popular novels/other popular nerdy things. Or are pretentious as hell in general.
You just have to work to find the 50% who aren't like that. It'll happen. I've finally found a group of writers who (so far, at least) seem like genuinely nice, non-pretentious people.
Re: Asshole Writers
(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)AYRT - I wasn't looking down on people who like that! I like those things too! I'm more annoyed by the fact that a lot of these people in this social circle seem to criticise EVERYTHING, as if their criticism is biblical canon and everyone must be interested in hearing it.
(Actually, that's another thing I found annoying about this acquaintance - the long-winded lady would say: "I like the thing!" And acquaintance would go: "BUT there was this wrong with it and this, and THIS thing is soooo much better." And then they'd both debate the same point for five minutes while I smiled and nodded.)

Argh, so annoying.
Re: Asshole Writers
(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)I meant that if they're not too obsessed with their own stuff, they're too obsessed with only liking certain things.
You hit the nail on the head. I think there's some overlap with a certain variety of elitist nerd. ("The OT was better! If you like this thing I disapprove of, you SUCK!") Or just declaring that they hate something and anyone who likes it is stupid, without being aware that the person they're talking to might be a fan.
