I thought Buffy was like, totally like, a flaky teen dramedy with vampires for reasons and like things.

I was not expecting an intelligent show with great characters.

(It doesn't help that teen magazines of the time only focused on Buffy's romantic exploits. "OMG ANGEL OR SPIKE LIKE OMG."

If you had seen the original movie, then it really was a flaky teen dramedy. The series was a major improvement on it.
