For the first time in 20 years I've put up a Christmas tree in my apartment. It feels both triumphant that I've beaten my depression enough to care to put up a tree, and anticlimactic that it changes so little. I is conflictid.

Feel triumphant! That's great!

I'm glad for you, anon! Are you enjoying your tree? Did you put up some chocolate decorations? They're usually a little too tempting not to eat at least one or two whilst putting them up.

I understand how you feel, anon. When I moved to the UK, I really thought I would get a sudden burst of happiness and it'd be all rainbows and sunshine, but I got used to it almost immediately. It had changed a lot of things, but I couldn't actually feel happy about it. I know it's because of the hedonistic treadmill and people just get used to change really fast, but it was a bit of a bummer when I realised I didn't feel anymore inclined to get up in the morning just because I was finally in a place I actually wanted to be in life.

But just because you feel that way doesn't mean it hasn't changed anything, you know?? You've made your apartment more Christmas-y than usual and that's made things better than they were before by comparison and that's great! You're better than you were before you could do that, so bask in your feeling of triumph!

Well, you went to the UK from Malaysia and expected "sunshine." I see your problem.

Haha okay, not the best metaphor, but you know what I mean. Actually, I much prefer cold, gloomy weather. I was kind of disappointed when I first arrived in Wales and had a few straight weeks of sunshine. I was much happier with the weather once November came along.

Feel good about it. And it's not so much the tree is up as the fact that you did something that is generally just very cathartic. Decorating can be very cathartic. It's a form of creating something which is usually the reason people do it anyway, even if the results can vary.

No, it's great. You did good and should be proud!

Christmas trees are awesome and I'm really happy for you! What kind of topper did you put on it?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a star, the guy who sold the tree gives one away with every purchase.

Nice. I think stars are my favorite toppers!

The shitty thing about depression is that it sucks the joy out of your victories, which is awful because when you're depressed sometimes the little victories are what keeps you going. If I were you, I'd take a few minutes out of each day to sit quietly near the decorated tree with a good book and a hot cup of cocoa or tea and just remind myself that I did that. Yes, it doesn't change the world, but it's a sign of a small victory nonetheless.

This is a good comment!

Small victories are still victories, anon. Sit back, turn off the lights, feel triumphant, and enjoy that tree!
