How Do You Find Fanfic to Read?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you follow favorite writers? Rec lists? Searching tags for specific fandoms or content? Community hubs?

Search Ao3 and see if any of the summaries don't look like they were written by a twelve year old.

But I'll be honest, I almost never read fanfiction these days unless I'm searching for someone else.

Go on AO3 (then FF.net). Go to whatever character tag I want to read about. Go through EVERY page and read the fics that sound good to me. Just did this with the Jason Todd tag. Out of like 5000 fics, I liked 28 enough to bookmark.

any way of linking me to those Jason Todd fics?

Head over to FF.net, select the characters I want, the length I want, and exclude the genre I don't want, then browse the resultant summaries. Easy. Not as easy as when there were webrings and community sites and real forums, but still pretty good.

AO3. Mostly going through tags for ships, or looking through stuff by authors I like. Occasionally through specific content tags.

AO3, put in my tags, and read summaries until I find something interesting.

Rec lists don't do it for me.

I kind of go through a tag on AO3, unless something has specifically been recommended elsewhere. It works for gen, I guess.

I mostly look through whatever fandom or content tags strike my interest on ao3. Sometimes look through people's bookmarks, rec lists, or see what other people on my pinboard are bookmarking.

For live-action tv, dodificus has a pretty good recs lists. They have been posting infrequently for a while though.

I go to a fic archive site(like Ao3 or ff.net) and I search for the pairing or character I want and go through the pages reading whatever appeals to me, usually I only search for complete works as well but that can depend on how much fic there is in the first place.

On AO3 and FF, I generally browse through the pairing or genre tag.

If I want more, I tend to browse for archive sites dedicated to the pairing or MC. I also check out rec lists, LJ comms, and occasionally I'll even post to comms and some users send me rec lists. As a matter of fact, I did that once here, and a user had a bunch of great recs.

Also, if I like an author's style, I tend to check out the rest of their work.

Depends on the fandom. For a small one I'd search the web for any fics. If it's a big fandom and is new I filter by most kudos on AO3. If it's something Harry Potter related I head to FF.net.
Sometimes I google my favorite fic and "rec list" to find something similar or go through commenters' fave/bookmarks lists. I also like fic finder comms where I can filter by tags. Epic recs is a nice comm for multifandom recs.

I do the same thing to find rec lists too.

I usually just do the good old fashioned "Look through the pages until you see something you think you'll like" approach, unless I'm looking for something specific.

On FFN, I tend to look through author profiles to see what they have favourited. If that just ends up with all the same fics I've read before, I poke at the communities to see if they have something I haven't seen before or haven't read recently.

Sometimes I will go check crossover pages as well, because sometimes crossovers can be fun.

AO3 is a different kettle of kippers, and I usually sort by characters, pairing, and whether the fics are completed yet.

Re: How Do You Find Fanfic to Read?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-14 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
For the first thousand or so fics I read in a given fandom, I go with recs lists all the way. Seriously, RECS LIST ARE SO IMPORTANT IN UPING YOUR FIC-READING GAME. plus when I find a good fic through a recs page I then tend to read everything else that author has written. I also check out people's bookmarks on AO3, and as long as the bookmarked fic sounds good and has a decent amount of kudos, I read it. Reading the most kudosed fics in a given fandom can work too, if you're in a hurry, and in the case of smallish fandoms that are new and slashy, reading the most kudosed fics on AO3 is probably your best bet.

Searching through an archive at random, or nearly at random, is the kind of last resort behavior I only engage in when I've already read everything popular as well as everything anybody is reccing in my fandom. I would NEVER recommend that anyone search for fanfic this way unless there are no half-decent recs pages to be found.
