OP may have resisted using quotes from that (because...Barthes!) but yes, he definitely gets it (and explains it a lot better than I'd ever be able to). The other commenter above is definitely right that it's a common trope with theater and sports, but I do think that junction between theater and sports is part of what makes wrestling unique.
