I'll do you one better: when I'm unsure about whether I acted the correct way, I imagine how the fandom would have reacted to said act if it had been committed by a fandom darling.

Guilt? What guilt? I'm just misunderstood.

I hope that works for you. I have terrible secondhand embarrassment even for fictional characters so I often skip scenes where they are humiliated.

I'm the exact opposite, OP

I have huge secondhand embarrassment and I will leave the room if I think a character, especially one I love, is going to do anything embarrassing, even if it means I miss a plot development or such

Hell, I've gotten up to go to the bathroom in middle of watching a movie at the theatre just because of it

Suddenly needing coffee from the kitchen and competing with hubby over who's going to get it. "I can go." - "No, I can get it." - "No, I said it first."

Or forcing him to watch while I cover my ears and go "Naa naa naa!"

Good strategy! It also helps to have a friend who will do for you what Gohan is doing for Piccolo in that pic, even if you do make a fool of yourself ;) It makes EVERYTHING better, no matter how embarrassing it is.

Dude, that is brilliant.
