Well, duh, but if that's the problem then we're just back at the original "profiting from fan art is wrong" argument, not this sturm und drang about copying the show's style or whatever. You either think fan artists should sell their stuff or you don't. What does it matter what it looks like? Copying the show doesn't make it "more wrong" unless you're also lying to your fanbase and saying this is official merchandise or something (and I don't think I've seen fan artists do that anyway).

Agreed. If selling fanart is wrong, I don't see how a certain style makes it "more wrong". I mean what if you draw Link in Adventure Time style? Is that more, or less okay? On one hand, it's not Adventure Time in Adventure Time style but you're still copying the style... it's a weird hangup imo.

Now I'm wondering if there are fan artists out there who specialize in drawing characters in the styles of other popular media. I think I'd be more interested in that than I would be in normal fan art aping the original style.

Back on LJ in the old days, there was someone who drew Harry Potter characters in the style of Powerpuff Girls and as I recall, they were pretty popular.
