Yup! You always said you were older than you were, unless and until you came across someone you thought you could trust enough to reveal your real age (or, at least, age-range).

And I've noticed that that's stuck. The people I follow on tumblr who are of my generation might note that they're late 20s or early 30s, or even just 21+, but they won't get any more specific than that. Could be selection bias on my part, though.

I feel like that's just part of getting older. Like how little kids will insist that they're four and a half, not four, but then you stop doing that when you reach a certain age. Giving a range instead of an exact age feels like it's just the next stage of that.

It might be a little bit of that. But I think it's telling that many of us were also reluctant to reveal our exact ages back when were teens. I really do think that the norms of the internet were different back then, with there being a heavier emphasis on anonymity.

The real test will probably be to see how the current crop of teens engages with the internet in ten to fifteen years.
