hm, I don't see a difference between selling chibies and realistic looking fanart. Intellectual property is the same in both cases. :/

I agree. Lots of people (OP included) are drawing an arbitrary distinction between fanart in a different style than canon and fanart in the style of canon without realizing that it is an arbitrary distinction rather than a legal one.
