I feel like they're equating copying the style with tracing. Sure, tracing is probably something that you do more when you're first developing your skills (so, a younger age), but please go and tell professional animators working off of models, PAID TO APE THE OFFICIAL STYLE, that they're just so immature and need to develop their own style.

It's like telling fanfic writers they need to stop playing with someone else's characters and go make their own.

Sadly, fanfic writers do get that. All the time.
