tumblr questions

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
There's a tumblr user that I really love. I want to send her an ask to tell her how great she is but I don't want to sound too enthusiastic and weird. Any advice on what to say?

Also, I reblog all her stuff on a side blog. It's not connected to my main blog. I don't think there's a way to ask from the side blog (is there?). So, should I make the ask anonymous with my side blog name? Or use my main blog? I just don't think she would know me from my main blog and it would be nice to keep them separate.

If you send a fanmail, you can change who you send it from (main/side(s)).

I did a poll here once and it sounded like people didn't like fanmail. She couldn't easily reply to me (which would also be true if I did an anon ask) unless she followed me, which she doesn't.

People still check fanmail?

I think you're thinking too much about this. Assuming they're not Justin Bieber tiers of popular and have a history of reading and responding to asks, they'll probably be touched that you actually took the time to say thanks.

If you are concerned about keeping main and side separate, then anon is fine. I don't think you can ask with a side blog.

Also it sounds like you're not trying to strike up a friendship and instead just want to say thanks which is much more acceptable. If you wanted to collaborate or correspond long-term, it miiight be awkward later explaining "yeah I use this side blog to follow you because I'm ashamed of being associated with you on my main".

I would say something like, "Hey! I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your [art/fic/meta]! I especially like [positive feedback]." And then maybe ask a question to start a conversation, if you're looking to do that.

I don't think you'll come across as weird; I'm sure she'll really appreciate it!

I'm afraid I'm not sure how the whole side blog thing works, though. Maybe ask with your main blog and note in the greeting that you run the side blog? Like, "Hey, this is the main of [side blog name]!"

I don't know anything about the specifics of sending an ask from a side blog, but I doubt one ask is going to make her think you're obsessed with her. From what I've seen of tumblr, most people seem to appreciate getting messages!

So do it however you feel comfortable, really.

Just do it, you'll make their day. Word the ask in a cool, respectful way rather than being all gushy if you're worried about sounding weird. I can't imagine anyone would take issue with being appreciated.

What does a "cool, respectful way" sound like?
