Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
This happened to me several days ago in a thread about working out, and it's been bugging me ever since.

Like, why? Is it so hard to believe that there are people who are in fandom, people who sometimes hang out on this comm, that aren't overweight?

huh...link to thread?

that's an interesting assumption. I assume that people here are of varying body types.

Re: Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

Don't have a link to it, but it was the one where I was talking about wanting to cosplay She-Hulk, and some anon commented with something like "Well you need to go the gym more, Big Bertha."

Something asinine like that. It rubbed me the wrong way, because in the original comment there was absolutely no indication of my weight or body type. All I said was that I didn't think my biceps were big enough to cosplay She-Hulk without looking ridiculous.

I don't even know why it's still bothering me days later, it's such a stupid thing, but this is far from the first time I've run into people assuming that EVERYONE in fandom is either overweight, leads an unhealthy lifestyle, or both. Which simply isn't true.

And a something someone said to me IRL today reminded me of that thread, which is why I am bringing it up now.

Gyms are also places where not-fat people go to build muscle. Like the kind of muscle She-Hulk would have. Yanno?

That sounds like they may have just been trying to find a way to insult you rather than them thinking you're actually fat.

They're a jerk either way, though.

"You're fat" is a classic multi-use insult that people who aren't smart enough for intelligent conversation, or creative enough for intelligent insulting, can fall back on. There's a high success rate, because people are generally insecure about their appearance.

I think because fandom is such a sedentary thing, and it just allows fat(ter) people to participate. But EVERYONE just seems like a weird generalization.

Re: Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Most people in fandom are Americans.
Most Americans are fat.

I'm not fat OR an American but I just automatically assume this about my (english-speaking but non-American) fandom. IDK what the situation is in non-english fandoms.

You're an asshole. Work on that.

Re: Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

I'm not American either, and I don't make that assumption.

Then again, I don't assume that everyone is American unless they've got an American flag in their icon (and even then, they could just be a Bandit Keith fan).

Huh. You know, thinking about this, I just realized I tend to assume the opposite: that everyone is skinny.

I'm not sure that's any better.

I think I do too, at least until I see photos. Maybe that's because I know I am fat and assume everyone is thinner than me.

Being called fat on the internet is such a thing that I barely blink at it anymore. I mean, it's rude as hell, and people shouldn't make assumptions either, but it happens no matter what. It's like the most popular insult on the net. (No creativity, guys.)

Our trolls are lacking in originality. Sorry about that.

Re: Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

It's a stereotype, and an unimaginative insult, thats all.

Re: Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I personally assume there's a wide variety of body types but that the majority of posters are somewhat awkward irl. (I don't mean this as a hurtful thing. I'm very awkward and I've met a LOT of other fandom peeps throughout the years and most have been a little strange.)

Statistically, though, most people in fandom probably ARE fat. The majority of American women are, (and probably the majority of women in the UK, too?), and it's not like the rest of the world is that far behind in fatness. Fandom and it's related activities (drawing and writing, watching TV or playing games) are totally sedentary.

I think as fandom becomes more mainstream and things like j-fashion and /fit/ become more popular among geeks there's been a gradual shift towards the various nerdy subcultures being more active overall.

Just the other day I mentioned in a thread about workout habits that I am thin, and was jumped on by what may have been the same anon. Specifically they said, "Never trust anyone who says they're "quite thin" on the internet."

Which I don't know if they meant they thought I was lying about my build (because, as you say, the assumption that everyone in fandom is fat) or that I was fishing for compliments or something. Which I wasn't. I wasn't even somehow conflating being thin with being healthy, because with my chronic illness I am the former but not the latter.

Anyway, don't let it get to you. They were just being rude, and I hope you have a great time as She-Hulk.

Re: Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
which doesn't make any sense since thinness can also be associated with being inactive and unfit.

Re: Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
specifically in regards to women: trolls think the easiest way to insult a woman is to bash her appearance because "all women are self-conscious about their weight". it's lazy trolling.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't assume EVERYONE in fandom is fat, but from personal experience I've encountered a much higher percentage of fat people in fandom than I have outside of it.

Try not to take it to heart. Probably the same anon who called me fattie in a thread where I was complaining about no clothes fitting because I had lost weight ;p

Do you think she-hulk will be your inspiration to build up muscles? Not that you need to to cosplay, asking curiously cause Korra and the one Korra cosplay we is my inspiration to tone up some more.

I'd say let it pass and ignore anyone else who says something like that.

I personally would be more likely to respond to a fat insult by saying "Yep". Just because I know I am.

Re: Why do people here assume everyone in fandom is fat?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
Half the people on my f-list regularly complain about being fat, the other half never mention their weight. The first fandom friend I added on Skype several years ago immediately started talking about... I don't know if there is a word to translate the concept in English: those creams you masasge onto your enormous thighs and that are supposed to magically burn away the fat. She believed in those something hardcore and wanted me to rec her a new one that would work even better, instead of, you know, keeping up with our fandomish discussions.
Despite this incident, I still assume that everyone is thin, and intelligent/educated.

Pretty sure we just call them thigh creams or cellulite creams over here.
