Jessica Jones is a Mary Sue. That is not a term I use lightly, but goddamnit, she IS.

Alias is nothing more than Brian Michael Bendis' shitty Mary Sue fanfiction about his sooper speshul OC who he just HAD to ret-con into all the pivotal moments in Marvel history. She was there when Spider-Man got his powers! She's BFFs with Carol Danvers and all the other Avengers, and she's totally been there super-heroing alongside the rest of them all along, they just never mentioned her because of reasons! She has an EPIC ROMANCE with Luke Cage! Feel sorry for her because of her tragic past!

Having said all that, the version of her in the TV show is way more tolerable than the comics. Because the TV show is just plain better written than anything Bendis could come up with; I'll freely and gladly admit that it's better, even though I loathe it and loathe what it did to Hellcat. I don't think Jessica Jones the show is bad per se, I just can't stand Jessica Jones the character, and a big part of that is I'm resentful that one of the worst characters in the comics has been given her own show BEFORE a bunch of other lesser-known characters who are much more deserving, including some of characters in her supporting cast like Luke and Patsy (I absolutely refuse to call her Trish).

That is how I really feel, not that you actually care.

Probably not my place to weigh in, as I haven't seen the TV show, and I'm only one trade into the series, but I like that she's this shitty low-level hero who's just kind of ~been around~ with generic powers. It makes sense to me as a facet of worldbuilding. For instance, Captain **** from Nextwave may or may not have actually appeared in anything before Nextwave (I think mileage may vary on whether he's an expy or an existing character? I forget), but the idea that being really strong and being able to fly a bit is just generic and kind of lame is one I can get behind in the -616. Of course, I'm speaking as a huge fan of the Sentry, so once I've swallowed that one, someone like Jess is much easier to believe in.

They only have twenty-two pages or so an issue, and they have to fit in a fight in most stories. Imagining that some low-level characters try it out and find it's not for them, and are then only recognised by nerds like the Young Avengers? For me, that's not only the simplest kind of retcon, but one which actually adds to the depth of the world it's set in.
