I haven't played it yet, but this game is for free on Origin now. Just fyi if anyone is interested.

I played Jade Empire after playing ME, ME2 and the first two Dragon Age games, and I was blown away by its narrative. I didn't love any of the characters, which is unusual for a Bioware game, but the story is incredibly well done.

However, I think that the Imperial Agent storyline in The Old Republic is better. If you haven't played it, I'd highly recommend subbing for a month just to run through it, if you can. Leveling is fast and easy, even solo, and the story is legitimately well done. The only negative is that you're stuck with the same companion for a long time and she's a bit of a pain in the ass sometimes.

The IA storyline is so overrated. It's good, but not the BEST OMG EVER for SWTOR. I found Sith Warrior more satisfying and Bounty Hunter more fun. (Republic side, I enjoyed Trooper and the first act of Smuggler, Jedi Knight wasn't bad if you ignored the canon stuff).

Baaahhh!! Jade Empire secret! I loved this game so much - it was the last console game I ever played.

Jade Empire is the actual best Bioware game.

Jade Empire love train woo

It's the reason I got into East Asian mythology, and having replayed it recently, there's a lot of stuff in it inspired my more obscure elements of Chinese history and folklore. Chai Ka, for example, seems based on these pottery figures from an actual Tang dynasty tomb (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b8/Tang_Dynasty_sancai_pottery_tomb_guardians.JPG), and the Imperial Palace looks like a giant floating ding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ding_%28vessel%29). BioWare made a few gaffes (characters often talk about wine being made from grapes, as opposed to rice, which would be way more likely in an China-inspired setting), but they clearly went in-depth with their research.

It broke my heart to hear that liking Jade Empire is apparently a joke around the Bioware offices. It's probably the most creative one they've done. Jade Empire and Dragon Age 2 are my favorite Bioware Games so I'm in the minority.

Well, didn't EA buy BioWare after that? So essentially it's the last "proper" BioWare game. IIRC many of the best people went to work for Obsidian instead - also one of the reasons why Obsidian runs circles around BioWare nowadays when it comes to stories and writing.
