Because the idea of claiming 1/16th or 1/32nd Native American is a... reasonably common thing that people do, and one that is often mocked as being meaningless bullshit.

Well, I do find the white guilt aspect funny. But I'm actually serious and have birth records and whatnot to back it up.

Not that I'm about to go claiming native status - because let's face it I'm way too white and have no connection to that culture - but still.

I am 100 percent not trolling. I spent a couple years at a university funded by the Department of the Interior for which, at the time, the only cost was a few hundred a semester (I think it's up to $1,000 now). After that, the Bureau of Indian Affairs gave me a scholarship that covered half my tuition elsewhere. After that my tribe paid off the measley $5,000 I'd built up in student loans. My first internships came by way of programs aimed at advancing minorities, and after I graduated one of them hired me.

And my tribe sends out about $4,000 a year in casino profits to all tribal members.

So, you say stereotype, I say damn lucky.
