I get what you're saying but I'm confused about the first line. If the intention is to show that Maya and Riley are Corey and Shawn, why would they have them replicating a conversation between Corey and Topanga?

They had Corey and Shawn do similar things in the original series and it was more about showing the equal depth of feelings than a direct correlation of romantic feelings.
