This feels like one of those cases where the term "Gary Stu" is thrown around too readily. Uhtred has plenty of flaws: his temper, his obsession with getting back Bebbanburg, his lack of diplomacy and stubbornness in the face of people trying to tell him how to get along in Saxon culture, etc. He's brave and a good fighter, but it doesn't mean he doesn't do some really stupid, impulsive things. If anything, I think he's a pretty good protagonist.
