I think as long as a viewer is invested on a character and that character's development, the technical elements wouldn't come off as filler. And really, anyone who thinks the sports parts of a sports anime filler is weird.

Okay, I'm so totally recommending you to watch Oofuri. The protagonists is the battery too, and it gets very in-depth on pitch selection and stuff, 'cause the pitcher has a slow fastball but a lot of breaking balls. And overall it gets pretty technical (especially in the manga), as the author was a graduate of sports science, if I remember correctly.
