Sengoku Basara fandom has always been really quiet. Even at it's heyday in the English speaking fandom it's always been extremely lowkey and unobtrusive.

Now I'm curious what you ship though. I definitely ship KoMasa (to be honest this is one of those ships where I'm like "how can you not?" lol, especially post-Judge End where Masamune is literally like "I'm a lucky guy!" when he mentions Kojuurou being like the person who made him want to keep living like hooooly shit), but my two hardcore "non flagship" pairings are...really kind of weird. The weirdest one has got to be Ieyasu/Tadakatsu. They're just...really kind of cute in a weird way. The other is Yoshitsugu/Mitsunari. The latter makes a lot of sense, both historically (they were linked as being lovers and best friends) and within the SB universe, but I'm not used to shipping such blatant fucked-upness. Like "oooh, how romantic, he nearly beats the life out of his own soldiers because they picked on Yoshitsugu behind his back"...it's not exactly the cutest ship out there, even though there are plenty of canon hints that Yoshitsugu is obsessed with Mitsunari, and that Mitsunari still defers to Yoshitsugu even though he wouldn't for anybody else. :P It's unhealthy as fuck though, so I have a hard time explaining exactly why I enjoy it.

yoshitsugu/mitsunari is god tier. you have good taste, anon. :|b

Holy shit another Yoshitsugu/Mitsunari shipper? :D Yay! They're one of my absolute favourite pairings, no lie. I have a ton of doujinshi for them, I've even gotten a few translated. I got one translated, it's called "Self Sacrifice", it's literally the best, most realistic R-18 doujinshi I've seen for those two. Normally when sex is involved it gets a little OOC, but this doujinshi is pretty amazing, and it features a really interesting interpretation of unbandaged!Yoshitsugu.

there's more of us around thank you think! at least two of my friends ship it.

aah, finding good doujinshi is great. i can stomach the ooc stuff because i'm thirsty but i'll always prefer when fanworks manage to stay true to the characters. for some reason, though, i'm a lot pickier when it comes to fanfic.

I was a bit bombarded with SB stuff because a lot of (RL) friends were fans at the same time and we're having a blast reblogging as much as they could. So maybe that's why it didn't seem so quiet to me.

My favourite character is Hanbei and I really love anything including the Toyotomi side (especially the sort of family fluff/angst kind with Hideyoshi, Hanbei, Mitsunari and Ieyasu). Sadly, Hanbei isn't one of the most prominent characters, especially since the second game never made it outside of Japan and the Toyotomi/Tokugawa conflict and Hanbei's death were really butchered in the anime to further boost the fan-favourite (Masamune). That annoyed me a lot.

That's most likely why. The problem with an anime like Sengoku Basara is that it can be a lonely experience unless you find a friend to get into it with. I managed to get a friend of mine into it as well so it wasn't that bad, but the lack of a real cohesive "fandom" is pretty strongly felt with a show like this.

Yeah, the game definitely gave a lot more backstory to Hideyoshi and company. I really enjoy Hanbei as a character too, his devotion to Hideyoshi is interesting, and I'll be the first to admit I ship the hell out of those two in the same tragic-villain sense that I ship Yoshitsugu/Mitsunari (as a side note, Ieyasu and Mitsunari always seemed like brothers to me, which makes their eventual circumstances even more sad). Well, if I may circlejerk for a second I'll go as far as to say I think the relationship between Hideyoshi and Hanbei is kind of subtextually implied to be romantic/sexual/whatever.

But yeah, I think Hanbei's subplot could have been handled better in the anime. I'm all for seeing Masamune loose his marbles a bit because someone stole his boyfriend Right Eye, but having Kojuurou just sit up in a tower for like 3 episodes and then not having a real resolution to the whole thing could have been done differently. I haven't really delved into the differences between the game and the anime (I'm more familiar with SB 3 versus the anime), how did they handle Hanbei in SB 2?

The lack of a real cohesive fandom is probably due to the fact that a lot of people have very fixed OTPs/a few favourites and they only care about those instead of a general "fandom" - so if you're not into any of the the flagship OTPs, it gets pretty lonely. There also was a lot of unsourced fanart reposting of pixiv artist's stuff in this fandom, and that's just ... eh. Not nice. (There were lots of askblogs that died off as quickly as they came as well.) Fandom in general was most active when the third game came out, I think.

Hanbei/Hideyoshi works so well in a tragically onesided kind of way on so many levels! Even ignoring the (very, very ridiculous) size difference, there is just so much potential why a relationship would not work even though one or both of them would want to (Hanbei's massive devotion and resect for Hideyoshi, Hanbei's sickness - both in a "he's too fragile" on one side and "it's fucking contagious" on the other etc. etc.) - and at the same time, it could work perfectly as a romantic ship. So much potential. I also thought that the whole "family" dynamic (with dad Hideyoshi, mom Hanbei and sons Mitsunari and Ieyasu) was definitely implied to some extent.

I'm mostly pissed that they took the "Kojūrō defeats Hanbei, Masamune kills Hideyoshi" route because damn. DAMN. ALRIGHT yes, the series is not exactly a shining example of historical correctness and there really isn't much basis to complain but that was just so wrong it hurt. (Okay, historically, Kanbei was probably the more important strategist for Hideyoshi and look what they did to him in the games but hey, the committed to the "Hanbei and Hideyoshi" thing, so that was that. And only changed the end in the anime because Masamune was so damn popular. And damn it's so wrong but yeah, I'm rambling.)

In SB2, Hanbei's routes were basically him going around being his strategic self, removing obstacles and easing the way for Hideyoshi's army. I think in any ending, he succumbs to his illness before the Toyotomi army's final battle.
