Well, sometimes secrets are complicated and require more text to fully explain. But a lot of the time, people could be more succinct if they got to the point instead of rambling.

I wouldn't mind the longer secrets if so many of them weren't going off topic or adding nothing with their length.

Some secrets do involve a bit of background, but clarity is needed when writing them.

As long as the text is actually legible (i.e. no impossible-to-read fonts or colour combinations), I don't care how many words they have.

I think some people complain because in some of the secrets, the majority of the text isn't salient to the secret and can easily cause confusion and misinterpretation. On the other hand, some people do complain about secrets that they deem too long, no matter how on topic the text is - and you're right, they can just scroll past and not comment just to complain about how long the secret is. "Don't like, don't read" should be a rule of thumb.
