This is moving a little away from your main point, but I really wanna say fandom's huge boner for Kuroo was something I didn't see coming at all. Usually I can see why fandoms find whichever characters attractive even if they're not my type, but Kuroo never looks anything but goofy to me and IDGI. So yeah, that and me forgetting they even interacted led to much confusion about where the Kuroo/Tsukishima ship came from for a while.

It kind of surprised me too. I mean, I think he's cute, but I think all the characters are cute. The huge fangasm over him in particular surprised me, and I think it's because a bunch of people misinterpret his character. He's a dork, not a sex-god.
