I don't even remember being asked my nationality years ago, because it didn't matter. Fandom was about enjoying something not matter who you were, now... ugh, so many people asking for personal details and using them to judge and harass others.

Think the only time anything close to nationality came up, for me, when it was fandom stuff was what time zone someone was in so you yourself knew when to get online.

Sadly, if you did hang around chat rooms, you had some "A/S/L" trolls and couldn't say you were female. I think the reason fandom was less like this is the mods of places where fandom people grouped clamped down far more on things than other areas.

And on the other hand, if you DID say "look English is not my first language" people were not dicks about that, either.
