Ah, well then Van Kleiss kind of breaks the mold there doesn't he, in terms of a pattern? He is a genius, he's extremely wealthy, he doesn't care about love (in the comics he has a short fling with a female villain, and ends up turning her into a statue out of some form of misguided "you're more beautiful in my garden anyway" deal), and he's always portrayed as a legitimate threat, never really getting subverted with comedy or anything. On top of it all, he's charming and charismatic enough that half the world is willing to turn the other cheek with regards to his practices.
