Yeah, I totally agree with everything you're saying. I remember first going into the AO3 tags after the anime came out hoping for some good fic, and just being completely bemused by the ships. Ship and let ship, but there are definitely those undercurrents of shipping only attractive characters, or focusing only on the "attractive" half of a pairing.
Honestly I'm mostly into OPM for the friendships and comedy and that's what I look for in fandom work (with a side helping of Saitama and Genos, I'll admit). I agree there's a lack of appreciation of characters for what they are without all the added bells and whistles of shipping, but if that's what people want, alright. It can be a bit of a bummer in navigating fandom, especially in regards to certain characters that become eclipsed by a pairing they're in, but at least we have great canon that is already very satisfying.
