Its late and this is a random vent but

I joined a fandom secret santa exchange, and the person I got assigned gave me pretty much no prompt, just pairings and thats it. No tropes they like, no things to avoid, no Dear Creator letter, nothin.

So at the time I went okay, I will play it safe and write them a canon compliant fic. I did that, finished it, they're going live soon. But now I'm having major second thoughts because ACTUALLY the canon is very sad so as a result anything canon compliant will be at least somewhat sad. And now I'm going, gosh, they probably wanted something happy?? What if I really fucked up and they are disappointed? It doesn't help that I haven't written in a while so I feel like my skills are rusty. I'm suddenly very anxious about it and its keeping me from sleeping.

OP, you did a really sweet thing by signing up for a Fandom Secret Santa exchange, and you actually produced a fanwork in time with the deadline, which is more than some manage. You should be proud, and I'm sure the recipient will love it. If they don't, well, that's not your fault. They're free to write a secret about hating it and submit it here for discussion, though one would hope they don't personally attack or harangue you.

But that's the worst case scenario. And even if they were to hate it, they would ultimately have no one to blame but themselves. They didn't communicate especially clearly, and you did the best with what little you were given. If they love the characters and that pairing from a specific canon, there is no reason to be anxious about them not loving a canon-compliant fic, no matter how sad the source material may be.

Pat yourself on the back for participating in a Fandom Secret Santa, completing your work on time, caring as much as you do about the recipient's thoughts, feelings, and desires, getting back into writing even though it's been a while for you, which was a bit of a challenge, I'm sure, and please get some sleep. You're a good person, OP. I hope you sleep well and that you wake to find that your recipient loved your work.
