Spoilers, copied from my Tumblr
Positives:
1. Nearly everything. This movie was so amazing. It just invoked all the feelings that the original trilogy invoked. It make me happy and sad and angry and satisfied. This universe has always evoked these feelings in me, and The Force Awakens was a fitting addition.
2. Rey: Daisy Ridley was amazing, and her character was a fitting addition to the Star Wars universe. Ridley managed to make her complicated and interesting and made us want to root for her. I love that the main main character is a woman, I love that she’s a jedi-to-be, and I love that she’s competent and skilled. I can’t wait to see what comes next for her.
3. Kylo Ren/Ben Solo: Adam Driver was also amazing. I like that Ren was conflicted and only somewhat trained. He was fragile and complicated. Which makes him very different from the Star Wars villains that have come before, and I love it. And, despite the fact that he kills his father, I think he’s redeemable. Which is fitting given that Star Wars has always believed in redemption.
4. Finn: Making his character a conflicted Stormtrooper who decides to rebel was a brilliant decision. It makes him interesting. I love that he’s still not sure what he wants for most of the movie. I love his journey from stormtrooper to man who just wants to run but is determined to help friends to a man who sticks around and wants in on the fight.
5. Poe: We don’t get much of him, which makes sense. He’s the Han of the three, and Han was bigger in this one. He’ll probably step up and have more of a role in the next one. But what we got was great.
6. Ben and his parents: I love that whole storyline. I love that it is clear Han and Leia both still love their son and are conflicted about him. And the scene between Ben and Han is so charged with emotion. And just that gesture of Han’s after Ben stabs him with his saber. The stroking of his face. The love of a father for his son. So beautiful> I was pretty teary.
7. Starkiller base: I like that they have a superweapon and that they’ve upped the stakes. The base is pretty cool and also rather scary. I like the homage to A New Hope.
8. The effects: I’m not someone who thinks practical effects are inherently superior. And I for one like the look of the prequels. But this movie found a good balance of using CGI in the right places while still maintaining the look of the OT. It really does look like it could be happening 30 years later.
9. Snoke: Palpatine was always one of my favorite characters. And Snoke is an equally mysterious and creepy and powerful figure. I’m excited to see what they do with him.
10. BB-8: He’s adorable, okay? He’s like a little droid puppy and I just want to cuddle him.
11. The whole look and feel is perfect. It hits all the right nostalgia buttons while also being its own thing. And it is gorgeous. This universe feels lived in and like a place I’d like to live in.
Negatives:
1. John Williams’ score: It pains me to say this. I love his music and I’ve loved all the other Star Wars scores. I own them and listen to them all the time. Williams’ music was one of the best part of the prequels. Here, though, while his score was okay, none of the new themes were particularly memorable.
2. The destruction of the Republic: Look, I get that Abrams wanted to go back to the Rebels vs. Empire feel of the OT, but I think it was a wrong decision. Doing this removes most of what was won in the OT with the destruction of the Empire, and I think this was a mistake. I thought it was a mistake when the EU did it, and it was worse here because we never got to see the New Republic forming. Also, even apart from all of this, because none of the good guys are there to see it, it doesn’t have the same emotional impact that the destruction of Alderaan did.
3. Breaking up Han and Leia: I just don’t see how this was necessary. You could still have Han going back to being a smuggler after their son went dark while still having him and Leia together and perhaps married. She could still be General Organa. Nothing of the plot of the movie would be ruined, and you’d still have Star Wars’ power couple together. I admit that as a shipper I’m biased, but still. And we didn’t even get a kiss. I loved the scenes of them together, but I wish that Abrams hadn’t gone this route.
4. Luke and Leia: I understand why there was less Luke for storytelling reasons, but I wish we’d gotten a bit more at the end. Most people seem to love Han best of the original three, but it has always been Luke first, Leia second, and Han third for me. It totally makes sense, given that they were killing him off, that Han was in here the most of the three. But I feel like Leia especially was really underused. I wanted more of her.
Re: Spoilers, copied from my Tumblr
Same. It kind of felt like I was right back at the beginning, really awed at everything that was happening and super excited to see the outcome.
Daisy Ridley was amazing, and her character was a fitting addition to the Star Wars universe.
Daisy is a damn fine actor, and did a fantastic job as Rey. She was very believable and lovable and will be a great lead. I was so happy to see a female force user in the films. The fact that she's the lead just gives me warm, fuzzy feelings. She's perfect. (And so badass. I hope there's tons of lightsaber battles in her future. Her design is also great, btw. Nice seeing a female lead that isn't designed to look sexy but is still visually appealing and interesting.)
I love that he’s still not sure what he wants for most of the movie.
That's something I like about Finn, too. He's clearly a
sweetheartgood guy at heart, but he isn't entirely sure what he wants or what course to take. He's unsure of himself and a bit lost, but it does make him interesting. Even that first scene with Poe where he's like, "I need a pilot", was great.Adam Driver was also amazing.
Ooo, so that's his name. He was spectacular and I'm glad he's not dead. (Yet.) Totally with you on loving the fact that he's conflicted; he's a more natural villain in that he isn't just 100% evil, he feels very much like a normal person who's turned to the dark side and isn't having the easiest time of letting go, but wanting to. All those moments where he railed on equipment or whatever when he was pissed amused me, but at the same time I think they made him more likable because it felt like such a human reaction. I agree about his redemption; I don't think it would feel forced if they went that route, as long as they did a good job with the story. I would also be totally okay with him staying dark side, but I hope they keep him a bit conflicted no matter what. (Also, I just love Kylo's costume and voice. He's so damn nice to look at.)
He’ll probably step up and have more of a role in the next one.
Yea, I'm sure he will. I'm looking forward to it! The actor made an impression.
And the scene between Ben and Han is so charged with emotion. And just that gesture of Han’s after Ben stabs him with his saber. The stroking of his face.
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Just thinking about it is getting me teary. Both actors did a beautiful job during that scene. Honestly, this scene was predictable as hell for me, but it was so well written and acted that it was a standout moment. Done wrong this scene could've been SO cringe-worthy, but they got it right. Man, my emotions. (Leia must have a run-in with Kylo at some point. Please, pretty please.)
But this movie found a good balance of using CGI in the right places while still maintaining the look of the OT.
Absolutely!
And Snoke is an equally mysterious and creepy and powerful figure.
Right now I think I'm so caught up with Kylo Ren that I'm just going, "Oh, yea, Snoke existed too", but I'm open to more of him!
And I totes want a BB-8 plushie.
Here, though, while his score was okay, none of the new themes were particularly memorable.
You know, I thought the theme in the trailer was absolutely stunning. I listened to it again and again and felt like I was having a religious experience it was so good. But...I think you're right. Nothing else jumped out at me. Maybe on re-watch it would, I don't know.
it doesn’t have the same emotional impact that the destruction of Alderaan did
That is an excellent point, and I totally agree. It didn't hit me in the same way.
You could still have Han going back to being a smuggler after their son went dark while still having him and Leia together and perhaps married.
I'll admit, this bothered me too and I'm probably going to head-canon some of it away, but I don't think it's entirely far fetched. I don't like it, but I think it would be believable that they went their separate ways after everything painful they experienced; I can buy that they needed time apart. How long, who knows. (I choose to believe they were never entirely out of contact.)
We should've had more Leia, IA. I'm hoping she returns next time and maybe even has a scene with Kylo in the future (but NO KILLING THIS TIME). Luke...I adore Luke, but I wasn't really disappointed. Then again, I went into the film expecting he would show up at the very end, and thought it was a nice set-up for the next film. It excites me to think of Rey's (potential) training!
