I'm looking at Sound of Drop: Fall into Poison (horror) and Over the Hills and Far Away (romance.) Haven't picked up either yet. Everything I've tried so far, I wouldn't recommend.

Yeah, most visual novels are hard to recommend to others. It's a genre full of potential, but unfortunately few visual novels deliver.

OP, I'd suggest the Ace Attorney series as one of the few that does deliver, which you can find emulations for online (sorry, I lost all my links). The emulations run particularly well on Android (I found the Windows ones a bit laggy). If you have a DS handheld console, you can also get old carts for the games cheap if you hunt and are persistent (I got Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice for £0.50 on ebay).

There's no other visual novel I can recommend that is in the free or budget range. Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi for the 3Ds was amazing, but that costs in the region of £30. Most visual novels I've tried so far have been a disappointment, but I'm still hopeful.

I know AA - and I'm a huuuuge fan :D Played pretty much all the games, including the fan-translated one, save for the last one that was on 3DS. I also know Hakuoki, played the PSP version! Basically anything I can emulate is alright.

As for good VNs, if you liked AA, you might like the Jisei series by sakevisual, they're pretty good games and not horribly terribly expensive for the content (also available for download, if you know where to look.)
