Not long ago there was a thread in fandom secrets where someone admitted that they had skipped breakfast and dinner for a month in order to be able to afford a video game. Not only many people thought there was nothing wrong with that, but there were even some people getting all SJW about it ("How dare you judge what poor people spend their money on, you classist scum!!!).

For one month, if they were saving up for it, I wouldn't necessarily see a problem. Someone who actually has a decent salary and yet is always scrimping because they are spending on things like videogames? That's something else entirely.

And I say this as someone who used to spend way too much money on eating out to the point that I was always running out of money. It was a problem.

I absolutely believe in budgeting so you can save up money for cool stuff, but skipping two meals a day isn't healthy. To me, this crosses the boundary a bit into being a bad decision.

I'm sorry, but you really don't get to judge what poor people spend their money on. No, it's not healthy to skip meals for a month, but what the fuck else can you do to save money? Being poor means you can't really afford to save money without having to cut back on something non-trivial.

you can save up for more than one month, for one thing. it won't kill you to have to wait a few months to get something you want, and i say this as someone who makes barely over minimum wage myself.

That's actually true, but it's besides the point -- that nobody gets to judge poor people for what they buy, especially if they're just trying to make their lives a little more pleasant.
