Was planning on making this thread tonight anyway, but then someone else made a boob thread and now I kind feel like I've gone to a fancy party in the same outfit as someone else. Awkward. But what do we do? We acknowledge it and move on.

Ok, so tomb raider. I do not love the new series, The last game was so very much not a tomb raider game for very many reason. A fine game, don't get me wrong, but that was not Lara Croft. The physical stuff not withstanding she just wasn't Lara.

This new game is better with the writing, better with her characterisation, better with the action, and slightly better with it being a little bit less torture porn-y. Not wonderful, not tomb raider, but better.

So now the physical stuff. Still no plait, Only one handgun Hair loose and flopping all over the place (Seriously big hair in no kind of practical style) and of course, bush beating aside, the thing that's really niggling me: He boobs have gotten smaller than the last game.

Yes it's stupid and shallow, but this is really bothering me. I don't know why. Part of it is that I liked her bigger boobs, sure, but small boobs are not a deal breaker for me. I like lots of smaller chested characters. but in this specific case I am not at all happy with this. Maybe part of it is the semi-implied idea that bigger boobs are bad / objectifying and the need to be removed for people to take her seriously. Maybe it's the semi-implied idea that if you prefer the bigger boobs you're a creepy misogynistic fan-boy looking for fap fodder. Maybe it's the possibility that the people who think that aren't wrong about me (although I do still like the parts of the game that are more Lara-y. And I do like the game as a non-tomb raider game).

I don't know. Long and the short of it, the increasingly smaller boobs on Lara are upsetting me more than they should and more than I want to admit, and I don't think I'm bad for feeling like this, but I know I probably sound bad. It's just irritating me.

Ooh, Ooh, Ooh, the other thing that's irritatingg me: The voice acting. Ms Luddington, while very pretty, with a very cute English accent, is so not right for this part.

Now that you mention it, I do think there's a lack of characters who are both A) taken seriously and B) have big boobs. Almost as though big boobs make a character only good for fap fodder or comic relief, and have to be the focal point of the character instead of a character who happens to have big boobs.

It's a little sexist in the cliched big boobed bimbo kind of way. It's not the boobs, it's the gaze and the assumptions

it's like they're changing her character design by saying that big boobs are too inappropriate for the game, but everything else that's there to make her look hot is still there

honestly buddy is this a thing? i'm more than willing to believe that mainstream feminism encourages some not wholly positive/productive/realistic ideas about big-breasted women (? though I can't think of any examples, tbqh) but this idea of "feminist erasure" seems a little strongly-worded. Can you explain a little more what you mean?

Why do you care? Tit size should be the least important thing about a female character.

I get you, her big boobs were pure. Just because you reduce them doesn't make her less sexualized.

It's possible she's in better shape than she was in the last game? Breasts consist of 75-90% of fatty tissue, so when you cut fat, your breasts generally shrink to some extent (unless you're genetically predisposed to retain weight there).

Idk in the first new!Lara game she was a greasy civ, and now she's a full-on adventurer it's possible (probably, really) that she's spend more time at the gym. If they updated her look for that purpose it's a-ok with me. That's actual realism.

I haven't played a Tomb Raider game since the 90s, but I saw the newest promos and I was like 'that's not Lara!'

I just find it really irritating because there's SO FEW well-written women characters with big breasts. There's, what, Tifa Lockhart and Lara Croft? Maybe that chick from Bleach? (idk I have never watched Bleach, it's just the only other character I can think of seeing.)

It irritates me that apparently big breasts are just SO FUCKING SEXUAL that the only characters allowed to have that physical trait anymore are from hentai games? WTF? That's the opposite of progressive! We don't need every game character to be some bland waif, we need variety. Big ladies and little ladies and ladies with huge arms or legs or breasts or noses or whatever.

Mia Fey, maybe?

This is depressing to think about.

OK, I haven't played a Tomb Raider game in a long time, but I think I can sympathise?

Some characters are designed with a feature that is considered by critics to be a design flaw: Mario is short. Lara Croft has very prominent breasts. Peter Parker is an introverted nerd.

A later designer can try to "fix" this by making them more "acceptable" and "normal," but it comes at the cost of what made them distinct. It's genericisation, and it's definitely insulting to the original design team and to fans of the original design.

(And why shouldn't Lara Croft be busty, anyway?)
