I can't even appreciate the message. It's supposed to make you realize your life had meaning, but the movie is about a guy who did a whole bunch of obviously meaningful, good things. The flashback starts out with him saving his brother's life, for fuck's sake. How many average people watching the movie ever did anything as big as that? I don't know how we're supposed to relate its message to ourselves.

Wasn't the whole point that he had done great things, but he didn't see it that way? That he didn't realize just how meaningful his existence was.

It may not be relate-able for people who don't think they've done anything meaningful, but if the message does it's job, it's communicating that even if you don't think your existence is meaningful your friends and family and the people who's lives you've affected do.

You may not think that helping that stranger with their groceries meant that much, but to them it made what was otherwise a miserable day. Or just saved them a fair bit of time to get to their next destination easier.

You don't appreciate the message because you didn't get it.

The message isn't something as simple as "your life has meaning". It is that "your life has had a huge VISIBLE impact on everyone around you." George Bailey was suicidal because he felt that he was not helping anyone in life (and that he was stuck in a town where no one appreciated him).
