Re: Unpopular opinion thread

This anon doesn't think there are Americans who aren't Christian. They literally said they didn't believe me when I said I had friends who weren't.

DA

They also clearly refuse to listen to any evidence against their opinion and act like anyone who shares an experience is deluded or lying to themselves because dontcha know, only Thanksgiving!anon can be right.

You're not very bright, are you?

Not saying I agree with that anon, because I don't, but saying they didn't believe your claim of having non-Christian friends doesn't necessarily mean they think ALL Americans are Christians.

Logic. Learn to use it.

You mean like the kind of logic that argues that atheists who come from Christian families are somehow still "culturally Christian?"

i mean

what's the problem with that, seriously? would it be less offensive if you phrased it like "from a Christian culture"? because it's. like. literally true. if you grew up in a Christian family you come from a Christian culture; thus, culturally Christian. ??

It's putting a value difference on an atheist from a Christian background as opposed to an atheist from, say, a Muslim background or whatever, and that ex-Christian atheists are somehow less atheist or some damn nonsense. It's a bunch of bullshit.

Nah it's not about being less atheist, it's about affiliation and cultural identity and - I suppose you could say - something like tribe

a formerly Muslim atheist & a formerly Christian atheist have (or at least could very well have) precisely the same values from a religious point of view, and there's no value difference considering them both as atheists. but if you're talking about their cultural backgrounds and the way that frames their assumptions, I don't think it's absurd to say that those are going to look different.

also ime a certain amount of the idea of "cultural Christian" or whatever comes from atheists, not vice versa, so I think that it does matter to some atheists.
