Is it awkward for you to read smut written by people you know?

Conversely, is smut by strangers easier to read?

Oddly, no. Though I can't say the acquaintance didn't feel awkward knowing I read their smut.

No, though I've never read smut for anyone I know in RL. But the fandom for my current OTP is pretty small and we all follow each other on Tumblr and we all read each other's smut. It has never felt awkward.

It depends. On one end, I have an acquaintance who I largely know through online interactions, and she's been a slasher pretty much all that time. So I'm used to it with her. On the other end, if it were a relative it would be weird.

Reading stuff written by a boss or employee sounds really awkward.

Nah! Honestly, a couple of my best online friends' written porn has been some of my favorites. A, there's a whole other level of delight when I read it and it's good, simply cause I'm proud my friend wrote something so hot. And b, sometimes they throw something I have a particular kink for just because they know I'll like it!

Depends on who's writing it. If it's an online friend, not quite so much. A teacher or a family member, AWKWARD!
