You're talking about the 1% mainstream.

I've heard of the Superbowl, but I can't name any football players, or Kardashians for that matter. I know nothing about reality TV in general, but have maybe heard a few shows in my peripheral. But that's because they're advertised everywhere. That's what mainstream is.

The sci-fi equivalent is maybe Star Wars and Star Trek. Other "popular" sci-fi shows haven't reached every ear in the English speaking world. But it's stupid to say Battlestar Galactica or Andromeda isn't popular sci-fi, and it's really stupid to say Firefly isn't, when probably 99.99% of sci-fi fans have heard of it or seen it.
