I hate it when people expect all dogs to behave the same way regardless of breed. My family has always had Shelties, and I've lost count of how many times a self-proclaimed "dog person" was deeply offended that our dogs didn't instantly love them right after meeting them. Shelties aren't like that. They typically only get touchy-feely with people they already know really well.

So true. My best friend has a sheltie and I'm still waiting for her to warm up to me. She gets excited when I show up but it's rare for her to settle down and let me pet her. She'd rather curl up with my friend's family.

I fucking hate that view too. Some idiot here actually adopted a dog from a shelter without even researching the breed, and were SO SHOCKED it was incompatible with their lifestyle that they dumped it back on the shelter.

Humans suck sometimes.

Those dogs sound like cats. No wonder self-proclaimed "dog people" don't like them.

AYRT

I've never had a cat so I have no basis for comparison, but the thing about shelties is that they tend to get very attached to a specific person or group of people and act standoffish around anyone they consider an outsider, at least until they're used to that person. But to people who are in their "in-group", they can be VERY affectionate (sometimes to the point of smothering).

Are cats like that?
